Domain Rank Factors

Is Domain Age a Ranking Factor in SEO and Google Rankings?

Assess domain-age ranking claims, separate correlation from cause, and use search data to measure changes without mistaking a website birthday for progress.

A silver balance holding smooth and weathered charcoal cubes.

An older domain appearing above a newer competitor does not prove that age caused the difference. This evidence guide explains how to evaluate domain-age claims and measure a website’s progress without treating time since registration as an optimisation lever.

What would count as useful evidence?

A claim needs a clear definition of age: initial registration, first published website, first crawl or continuous use. These dates can differ substantially. A study comparing old and new domains also needs to account for content, links, brand demand, location and competition. Without those controls, the observation is correlation. A backlink history and a registration date are separate measurements; combining them in one score does not reveal Google’s weighting.

Measure outcomes at page and query level

In Google Search Console, record impressions and clicks for the relevant page and query groups. Compare equivalent periods, then note releases, seasonal demand, outages and marketing activity. Google’s traffic-drop guidance explains why changes need investigation. A site-wide average position can conceal a changing query mix, so keep the comparison focused on the business questions that matter.

For a useful progress report, keep query groups consistent and distinguish branded searches from searches for the service itself. Record the number of qualified enquiries with the same definition each month. If the business changes its tracking setup, annotate that date so an apparent improvement is not silently attributed to domain age.

A practical comparison in Perth

Suppose a Perth commercial cleaner’s new service page improves over three months. During that time, the team added building-specific examples, clarified service coverage and earned a mention from a customer association. Reporting that the domain simply became three months older misses several plausible explanations. Keep a change log and assess whether the page gained relevant non-branded searches and qualified requests. This is still observational evidence, but it is more useful for decisions than a birthday chart.

Turn uncertainty into a better next step

There is no verified domain-age formula to apply to those results. If impressions are missing, inspect eligibility and discovery; if visits arrive without enquiries, review the offer and search intent. A measured SEO programme should connect each recommended change to an observable problem. Record assumptions and preserve comparable reports so future reviews can distinguish a page improvement from changes in demand or reporting.

Common questions

A correlation study alone cannot isolate age from established content, links and brand demand. Review its methods before accepting a causal conclusion.

No. A patent describes an invention, not necessarily a currently deployed ranking system. Current official guidance and directly observed site evidence serve different purposes.

Terms in this guide

  • Backlink — A link from another website to yours. The context and purpose of a link matter; buying manipulative links is not a sound substitute for useful content and real reputation.
  • Google Search Console — Google’s tool for monitoring a website’s presence in Search, including performance, indexing reports and URL inspection.
  • Search intent — The task or question behind a search, such as learning a concept, comparing options or finding a provider. Content should answer the intended need.
