What is CSS?

Cascading Style Sheets: rules that control the presentation of a web page, including its typography, spacing, colours and responsive layout.

Rules for the presentation of web content

CSS controls how web content is presented, including layout, typography, colour and spacing. MDN’s CSS reference documents the language and its features. HTML supplies the content structure, while CSS applies presentation rules to selected elements. Those rules can adapt to conditions such as viewport size. In a business website, a shared styling system allows service pages, articles and forms to feel coherent while still using layouts suited to their different purposes.

Example: fixing an image that leaves a blank strip

A hero image may stop at the edge of a centred content container even when the intended artwork should reach the viewport edge. Stretching the entire page indiscriminately can introduce horizontal scrolling. A better investigation identifies which element controls the artwork’s position, width and clipping, then adjusts that relationship at the relevant screen sizes. Test the result with actual text and images, including narrow screens and browser zoom. A visual fix at one desktop width does not establish that the layout is responsive.

Keep styling changes predictable

Use shared design rules for repeated elements and scope exceptional changes to the component that needs them. Avoid a growing collection of broad overrides whose effects are difficult to trace. In Elementor, understand how widget wrappers and generated styles interact with the theme before adding custom selectors. Refined IT can organise styles so editors can change content without repeatedly repairing the layout. After a styling update, check the affected templates and interactive states, including focus, expanded menus and validation messages, rather than checking only the default appearance.

Common questions about css

Yes. CSS supports transitions and animations for suitable effects. Complex 3D scenes may also require JavaScript and a rendering library.

No. A visual rule can hide an element while its markup remains present. Content and access decisions should not rely on appearance alone.

  • HTML — HyperText Markup Language: the document structure used to describe web content, including headings, paragraphs, links, lists, images and forms.
  • Responsive design — A layout approach that adapts content and controls to different screen sizes, input methods and viewing conditions.
  • JavaScript — A programming language used for interactive website behaviour and application logic. Essential content should remain accessible if an optional visual feature fails.
  • UI design — User interface design: the visual and interactive controls through which someone uses a digital product, including components, states and responsive behaviour.

CSS affects both presentation and stability; optimisation must retain the styles that mobile menus and interactive elements require.
