What is a domain name?

A registered, human-readable internet name used to address services such as a website or business email. Ownership, renewal and account access should remain clear.

How a domain fits into your website

A domain gives customers a memorable address for your business. In a website URL, it is the named host between the protocol and the page path. The path identifies an individual resource, such as a service page; it is not a separate domain registration.

Registration gives the registrant the right to use an available name for a registration period, subject to the relevant terms. It does not automatically include website files, email accounts or a finished website. Those services are connected through DNS. MDN explains domain names and registration.

Example: checking control before a redesign

Suppose a business commissioned its original website years ago. The current owner can edit the pages but does not know which account holds the domain. A redesign is a good point to identify the registrant, registrar, renewal contact and authoritative DNS provider before a launch date is agreed.

Keep business-controlled access and a reliable recovery method. If an external supplier manages the account, document who can authorise changes and how access will be handed over. A forgotten renewal or inaccessible account can affect both the website and business email, even when the hosting invoice has been paid.

Choosing and maintaining a useful name

Prefer a name customers can recognise, spell and communicate accurately. Check the intended spelling in spoken conversation, printed material and a mobile browser. If several variants are registered, nominate one main website address and decide what the others should do.

A domain packed with service keywords is not a substitute for useful service pages. Avoid changing an established address merely to add another keyword. When a change is genuinely needed, plan redirects, internal links, analytics and customer communications together. Review renewal details periodically rather than relying on one person remembering a date.

Common questions about domain name

Only if the supplier’s arrangement explicitly includes both. Check the separate service records and expiry details rather than assuming one invoice covers everything.

Yes. Registration, DNS, email and hosting can be managed by different providers. The important requirement is clear ownership of each task and access to the accounts needed for changes.

  • DNS — The Domain Name System connects a domain with the records required to reach websites, email and other services. Changes need careful coordination because several systems may depend on them.
  • Hosting — The infrastructure and services that make a website accessible online. Capacity, reliability, security, backups and support should match the site’s role in the business.
  • Redirect — A server or browser instruction that sends a request to another URL. Permanent URL migrations should avoid unnecessary chains and link directly to the intended destination.
  • Brand identity — The visual and verbal elements that make a business recognisable, including its name, logo, colours, typography and communication style.

Choose a usable domain that fits the business and intended audience, then plan the ownership and technical configuration carefully.
