What is Figma?

A collaborative design and prototyping platform used to review screen layouts, interface components and user journeys before development.

Where Figma fits in a website project

Figma is useful for making design decisions visible before the website is implemented. Teams can arrange screens, establish repeated interface components and discuss a specific element in context. A clickable prototype links selected screens so a proposed journey can be reviewed.

Figma’s prototype flows can represent a whole journey or a smaller interaction, such as opening a menu and choosing a service. Figma’s prototyping guide describes how these connections work. The aim is to resolve questions about content and behaviour before they become development rework.

Example: reviewing a quote request

Suppose a service business wants a quote form that changes according to the selected service. A prototype can show the starting question, the relevant follow-up fields and the confirmation screen. Reviewers can check whether the language makes sense and whether customers are asked for information they can reasonably provide.

Include the awkward states as well as the ideal path: incomplete information, an unsupported request and a customer returning to an earlier step. Mark assumptions that depend on the eventual form platform or an external system. A designer and developer can then agree which interactions are illustrative and which are required.

What a useful design handover contains

A handover should identify approved content, component states, spacing rules, image treatment and mobile behaviour. Show how navigation changes on smaller screens and what happens when a heading is longer than the sample. Keep a clear record of the approved version.

A polished prototype is not a performance, accessibility or security test of the finished website. The implemented form must still validate submissions, store enquiries and handle errors correctly. Likewise, a screenshot at one desktop width cannot define every responsive layout. Use the design as a shared reference, then test the actual browser experience.

Common questions about figma

A design prototype demonstrates selected interactions. It does not, by itself, establish that production forms, integrations, content management or payment processing have been implemented.

Usually the design and the implemented site are separate. Agree which system is the source of truth for live content, and how approved design changes reach the website.

  • Prototype — An early representation of a product or website used to test layout, interaction and user journeys before committing to the full build.
  • Wireframe — A simplified screen layout used to plan content hierarchy, navigation and controls before final visual design.
  • UI design — User interface design: the visual and interactive controls through which someone uses a digital product, including components, states and responsive behaviour.
  • UX design — User experience design: understanding people’s tasks and shaping the structure, content and interactions that help them complete those tasks.

Design prototypes can expose navigation and mobile journey problems before they become part of the live website.
