What is a meta description?

A short summary included in page metadata. A search engine may use it as a result snippet, but can choose different text based on the query.

A suggested summary of the page

A meta description is a short description supplied in the page’s metadata. Google may use it when forming a search snippet, but can also select visible page content that better matches a particular query. The saved description and the text shown in search are therefore not always identical.

Google recommends accurate, distinctive summaries and does not prescribe one fixed character limit for every result. Snippets can be truncated to fit the display. Google’s snippet documentation explains the relationship between descriptions and displayed text.

Example: describing a glossary page accurately

A glossary page explaining DNS should summarise the explanation: what DNS does, how website and email records differ, and what to check before a change. A description that only advertises cheap hosting would not accurately represent that educational page.

For a service page, the summary can instead identify the service, intended customer and useful reason to visit. Avoid copying one broad company statement onto every page. Distinct descriptions help an editor verify that each page has a clear role, even though a search engine may choose another snippet for a specific question.

A practical editing check

Read the description beside the title and the opening paragraph. Together they should set a consistent expectation without repeating the same sentence. Remove keyword lists, unsupported superlatives and offers that no longer apply. Use normal punctuation and language a prospective customer would understand.

In WordPress, enter the description through the designated SEO system, such as Rank Math, and check the rendered source for conflicting tags from another plugin. A preview in the editor is a writing aid, not a promise of the final Google layout. Review descriptions when the underlying page changes, particularly after a service rename or consolidation.

Common questions about meta description

It may choose text from the page that better answers the particular search. A changed snippet does not automatically mean the metadata is broken.

No. Keep it concise and informative, but prioritise an accurate summary over filling a character target. Display space and query context can vary.

  • Page title — The title element in a web page’s head. It should identify the page clearly and distinguish it from other pages; search engines may rewrite the displayed title.
  • On-page SEO — Work on a page’s content and structure, including its topic, headings, metadata, relevant links and images, to help people and search engines understand it.
  • Click-through rate — The proportion of impressions that lead to clicks, usually expressed as a percentage. It needs to be interpreted alongside the query, position, audience and resulting enquiries.
  • Keyword mapping — Assigning distinct search themes and user intentions to the most suitable pages so that content has clear roles and unnecessary overlap can be avoided.

A description can help communicate the page’s value in a result snippet, although search engines may choose different text.
