What is technical SEO?

Improving the technical foundations of search access and understanding, such as crawlability, indexing signals, URL handling, rendering and performance.

Making content accessible and understandable

Technical SEO examines whether search engines can reach, process and interpret the content intended for public search. A useful service page can be held back by an accidental exclusion, a broken response or a rendering problem even when its copy is strong.

Google’s technical requirements identify access, a successful page response and indexable content as minimum conditions. Meeting those conditions establishes eligibility, rather than a guarantee that the page will be indexed or rank for a particular query.

Example: rebuilding a corporate website

During a rebuild, compare existing URLs with the new structure before launch. Decide which addresses remain, which have equivalent replacements and which content is retired. Check redirects, canonical references, sitemap entries and internal links against the same agreed inventory.

Then review representative templates: homepage, service, glossary, knowledge article and contact page. Confirm the main content and links are available in the rendered page, including when an optional animation fails. This connects technical checks to the real content that the business expects visitors to find.

Prioritise issues by their effect

  • Restore access to important pages returning errors or unintended exclusions.
  • Resolve contradictory URL and canonical signals.
  • Check templates that affect many pages at once.
  • Investigate measured loading or interaction problems.
  • Improve remaining details once the fundamentals are sound.

An audit should explain the affected URLs, the evidence and the proposed change. A long list of tool warnings is less useful when severity and relevance are unclear. Track the change and verify the resulting behaviour, so a resolved issue means the site now works as intended rather than simply producing a different report score.

Common questions about technical seo

No. Performance is one part. Technical SEO also covers access, indexing directives, URL handling, rendering and other foundations that influence how content can be discovered and understood.

They address delivery and interpretation problems. A technically accessible page still needs an accurate, useful answer for its intended audience.

  • Crawlability — Whether a search engine can discover and request pages and resources. It depends on factors including links, server responses, access restrictions and crawler directives.
  • Indexability — Whether a page is eligible to enter a search engine’s index. A crawlable page may still be excluded, for example because of a noindex directive or the engine’s own selection.
  • Canonical URL — The preferred URL for a page when identical or substantially similar content is accessible through multiple addresses. A canonical link communicates a preference rather than forcing a redirect.
  • Core Web Vitals — A set of user experience measures covering loading, responsiveness and visual stability. The current metrics are Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.

Technical reviews connect discovery and indexing checks with reliable rendering and page experience.
