Page Rank Factors

AMP

Understand AMP’s current role, review equivalent content and maintenance needs, and avoid assuming the format provides a Google ranking advantage.

A thin charcoal panel rises from a silver base.

AMP is a web component framework intended to support performant pages with defined implementation rules. Some sites maintain AMP versions alongside other pages. Choosing it is an architectural decision involving functionality and maintenance, not a shortcut to higher Google rankings.

Use current Google guidance

Google says AMP pages are indexed like other web pages under the same standards. Its July 2026 documentation update also says Search now takes users directly to publisher-hosted AMP pages. Older instructions centred on Google’s AMP viewer, AMP Cache and signed exchanges may therefore be outdated. Evaluate the current serving arrangement before following a historical checklist or diagnosing an apparent AMP issue.

Compare the actual user journeys

List what readers can do on each version: read content, navigate, use forms and understand the offer. Check that important information has not been removed from the mobile experience. Performance needs measurement on the real pages, not assumptions about the framework name. Review Core Web Vitals, interaction reliability and the cost of maintaining parallel templates when deciding whether the format still serves the business.

Check relationships and migration plans

Where AMP and non-AMP counterparts coexist, follow current discovery and canonical URL guidance. Test key links, metadata and content parity after template changes. If removing AMP, plan appropriate redirect behaviour and update references rather than leaving abandoned URLs. Technical SEO support can assess these dependencies before a platform change affects indexed pages.

Inventory AMP references before changing templates

Identify which internal links, canonical relationships, feeds or external integrations still refer to AMP addresses. Review how those references should behave if the publishing setup changes. A removed template can leave a URL live with incomplete content or lead visitors to an unrelated page. Keep a representative test list covering old and current articles, and verify content, navigation and response behaviour before treating the transition as complete.

A publisher example

Imagine a Perth industry publisher maintaining two versions of each article. Its AMP template lacks a useful comparison table that appears on the main version. The immediate issue is incomplete information, not a missing AMP ranking boost. The publisher could improve parity or assess consolidation around a well-performing responsive implementation. Either choice needs testing and monitoring. A migration can cause temporary search changes, and using or removing AMP by itself does not guarantee a traffic gain.

Common questions

No. Google applies the same standards regardless of the technology used to build the page.

No. Evaluate functionality, maintenance, performance and current Google guidance first. Any removal needs a planned URL and content transition.

Terms in this guide

  • Core Web Vitals — A set of user experience measures covering loading, responsiveness and visual stability. The current metrics are Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.
  • Canonical URL — The preferred URL for a page when identical or substantially similar content is accessible through multiple addresses. A canonical link communicates a preference rather than forcing a redirect.
  • Redirect — A server or browser instruction that sends a request to another URL. Permanent URL migrations should avoid unnecessary chains and link directly to the intended destination.
