Page Rank Factors

Breadcrumb Usage

Create useful breadcrumb navigation with valid destinations and matching markup, while recognising that Google search display varies by device.

Silver discs form a trail toward a blue cube.

A breadcrumb trail shows a page’s position within a website hierarchy, usually with links to relevant parent sections. It helps readers move to a broader category without retracing their browser history. It is especially useful in large catalogues and knowledge libraries.

Describe the hierarchy users understand

Choose meaningful parent sections instead of mechanically converting every part of the URL into a label. A product may sit within a clear customer-facing category even when the application uses a different internal path. Keep the trail short enough to follow, and make parent links lead to genuinely useful overview pages. A breadcrumb should explain location within the website, not list every page visited during the session.

Keep visible navigation and markup aligned

Where appropriate, BreadcrumbList structured data can describe the trail. Google’s breadcrumb documentation sets out required properties for supported use. Validate the actual published markup and ensure names, positions and destinations agree with the visible hierarchy. Do not add unrelated keyword-rich ancestors or fabricated categories to create a more attractive search path.

Understand the search-display limit

Google simplified mobile visible URLs in January 2025 to show the domain without the breadcrumb, while desktop retained breadcrumb display. A useful on-site trail still serves readers regardless of how search presents it. Technical SEO review can inspect breadcrumb links, markup and canonical URLs together, without promising a specific result appearance.

Test the parent pages as destinations

Follow each breadcrumb link and assess whether the parent page helps someone explore the broader subject. A category name that sounds logical can still lead to an empty archive or a confusing collection. Improve that destination or reconsider the hierarchy before adding more markup. Check trails after category changes, including pages reachable through multiple collections, so the selected path remains meaningful and does not imply a false relationship between unrelated sections.

A knowledge library example

Imagine a Perth IT provider with guides under Knowledge, Website Management and Backups. A visitor arriving at a restoration article can use the trail to find the broader backup collection. If those parent pages are empty or misleading, the trail adds little. Test mobile wrapping, keyboard use and broken destinations after reorganising categories. Breadcrumbs can strengthen navigation and communicate structure, but valid markup does not guarantee display or create a standalone ranking boost for every linked page.

Common questions

No. A hierarchy trail shows where a page belongs within the site, regardless of the route a visitor took to reach it.

No. Google controls appearance, and mobile results no longer show the breadcrumb component in the visible URL under its announced design.

Terms in this guide

  • Breadcrumb — A short navigation trail showing where a page belongs within a website’s hierarchy, with links to its parent sections.
  • Structured data — Machine-readable information describing a page’s content in a supported format, such as JSON-LD. It should use accurate, relevant properties.
  • Canonical URL — The preferred URL for a page when identical or substantially similar content is accessible through multiple addresses. A canonical link communicates a preference rather than forcing a redirect.
