Page Rank Factors

Natural Keyword Density

Review keyword repetition in context, identify stuffing and use customer language without relying on an ideal keyword-density percentage for SEO.

Charcoal and blue pebbles scattered through a silver bowl.

Keyword density is a calculation of how often a selected word or phrase appears relative to a body of text. Different tools count phrases, variants and navigation differently, which makes the resulting percentage a limited description of the writing.

Do not mistake a ratio for relevance

There is no published ideal Google keyword-density percentage. A page can repeat a service name frequently and still fail to answer the reader’s question. Another can explain that service clearly using pronouns, examples and related terms. Google’s Search Essentials recommends words people use to search in descriptive locations. That supports clarity of topic; it does not establish a formula for repetitions per hundred words.

Read repetition in its actual setting

Read the title, headings and body aloud, leaving menus and footer text out of the first pass. Mark phrases that sound forced or repeat information already supplied. Check whether repetition distinguishes products or merely fills space. A list of technical specifications may legitimately reuse a unit or component name. Editing should preserve precision rather than mechanically removing every occurrence above a tool’s threshold.

Make language serve the page

Use keyword mapping to connect the page with a specific need. State the subject plainly in the opening, then explain features, exclusions and next steps using normal language. Avoid swapping in awkward synonyms to lower a score. Review the page title and main heading as part of the same editorial task. SEO services can evaluate intent and content quality alongside repetition.

Compare the main copy with template text

A tool may count navigation labels, product variants and footer links together with the article. Inspect what the reported percentage actually includes before changing prose. If repeated menu labels dominate the result, rewriting a clear paragraph will not address the source of the number. Keep the editorial review focused on the text readers use to understand the offer, and investigate template clutter as its own usability issue.

A trades business example

Imagine a Perth roof repair page repeating roof repairs Perth at the end of every paragraph. A better version could explain leak assessment, repair scope, access requirements and how a quote is prepared. The service and location can remain clear without constant exact matching. Ask someone unfamiliar with the business what is offered and what they should do next. Track the quality of resulting enquiries, but do not claim that a lower density percentage caused a ranking change.

Common questions

There is no defensible universal target. Aim for clear, accurate writing that identifies the subject and answers the intended question.

No. Necessary repetition can be natural. The concern is unnatural or excessive use intended to manipulate search rather than help the reader.

Terms in this guide

  • Keyword mapping — Assigning distinct search themes and user intentions to the most suitable pages so that content has clear roles and unnecessary overlap can be avoided.
  • Page title — The title element in a web page’s head. It should identify the page clearly and distinguish it from other pages; search engines may rewrite the displayed title.
  • Conversion — A valuable action defined for measurement, such as a qualified enquiry, booked appointment or completed purchase. A page view is not automatically a business outcome.
