An outbound link sends a visitor from your website to another website. A quality outbound link has a clear reason to exist: supporting a statement, providing an original resource or helping someone complete a task your page cannot complete alone.
Evaluate usefulness at the destination
Read the linked page, not just its title or domain name. Check that it answers the promised question, remains accessible and has not changed purpose. A relevant original reference can be more useful than a famous homepage. Google’s external-link guidance supports linking where it makes sense for readers. It does not say that adding a fixed number of high-authority domains produces a ranking increase.
Represent commercial relationships accurately
Some links require relationship attributes. Google documents sponsored, ugc and nofollow for different circumstances. Paid placements should be qualified appropriately; user-generated links need their own moderation and implementation decisions. Do not sell ordinary editorial links as a way to pass ranking credit. Review both the visible disclosure and the technical treatment when an article contains an affiliate or sponsorship arrangement.
Maintain links as part of the content
Keep an inventory of important external destinations and revisit them when reviewing the page. Check broken responses, unexpected redirects and changes to the source’s meaning. Write descriptive anchor text and prefer the document that supports the statement. An SEO audit can include these checks while separating outbound references from the backlinks other websites provide to yours.
Review changes in the destination's purpose
A reference can continue returning a successful response while its content changes substantially. During a review, confirm that the page still supports the surrounding sentence and has not become a sales landing page or unrelated redirect. Prioritise links attached to important technical claims. Keep the original claim and verification date in an editorial record so the business can understand why the reference was included and replace it appropriately.
A software compatibility example
Suppose a Perth technology supplier explains which operating systems a device supports. Linking to the manufacturer’s current compatibility page gives buyers a way to verify the detail. Linking to an unrelated technology news homepage would not serve the same purpose. If the supplier receives commission through a purchase link, that relationship needs appropriate treatment. Useful references may support a purchase decision, but clicks leaving the site and changes in rankings need their own interpretation rather than an assumed causal connection.
Common questions
Should every external link be nofollow?
No. Ordinary editorial links do not all need qualification. Apply attributes according to the actual relationship and relevant Google guidance.
Do outbound links drain my site's authority?
That framing is too simplistic. Choose references for their usefulness, qualify commercial relationships and avoid manipulative linking schemes.
Terms in this guide
- Anchor text — The visible, clickable wording of a hyperlink. Descriptive anchor text helps readers understand where a link leads.
- Backlink — A link from another website to yours. The context and purpose of a link matter; buying manipulative links is not a sound substitute for useful content and real reputation.
- Conversion — A valuable action defined for measurement, such as a qualified enquiry, booked appointment or completed purchase. A page view is not automatically a business outcome.
