Page Rank Factors

Short URLs

Keep URLs manageable and descriptive, and weigh the risks of renaming established addresses instead of assuming shorter URLs automatically rank better.

A short silver passage connects two charcoal portals.

A short URL is an address with relatively few characters or path segments. Brevity can make sharing and maintenance easier, but a useful address also needs to distinguish the page and fit the website’s structure. The shortest possible slug is not always best.

Identify what makes an address difficult

Look for unnecessary tracking values, repeated folders, duplicated words or temporary session identifiers. Those issues differ from a meaningful product code or category path. Google’s URL guidance prioritises understandable organisation, not a universal character target. A compact but opaque address may communicate less than a slightly longer descriptive one. Keep the real user and system requirements visible during the review.

Some parameters carry necessary filter, product or campaign information. Removing them without understanding their purpose can break functionality or measurement. Decide which URLs should be indexed and which version internal navigation should use. Maintain a consistent canonical URL for duplicate variants where appropriate. A tidy-looking address is not sufficient evidence that crawling and indexing are correctly configured.

Avoid cosmetic mass migrations

Changing established URLs creates redirect, link-update and monitoring work. If the page already has a stable, understandable address, shortening it may not justify those costs. For a justified change, create a one-to-one redirect map and update the sitemap and internal links. Technical SEO support can distinguish unnecessary URL churn from a genuine architecture improvement.

Document which URL variants are intentional

Record which parameters identify meaningful content, which support tracking and which create unwanted duplicates. Avoid a blanket rule that strips everything after a question mark. Test representative URLs with the people responsible for filtering, analytics and commerce functionality. The resulting convention should preserve necessary behaviour while making preferred addresses easy to share and maintain, rather than optimising character count at the expense of the site’s actual purpose.

A document library example

Suppose a Perth training provider has a guide under several repeated folders inherited from an old system. A planned platform migration could simplify that address while preserving a redirect from the original. Renaming a clear course page from forklift-training to ft would save characters but reduce meaning. Test old bookmarks and important inbound paths after release. Shorter addresses do not guarantee higher rankings, and the URL’s visible length is not the same thing as how many clicks a reader needs to reach the page.

Common questions

No universal Google ranking target is published. Use an address that is stable, understandable and appropriate for the site’s architecture.

Not necessarily. Click depth is determined by links and navigation; the number of slash-separated URL segments is a different property.

Terms in this guide

  • Canonical URL — The preferred URL for a page when identical or substantially similar content is accessible through multiple addresses. A canonical link communicates a preference rather than forcing a redirect.
  • Redirect — A server or browser instruction that sends a request to another URL. Permanent URL migrations should avoid unnecessary chains and link directly to the intended destination.
  • Sitemap — A structured list of relevant site URLs. XML sitemaps support discovery by search engines; an HTML sitemap helps people navigate the site.
