Page Rank Factors

Content Recency

Decide when content needs updating, keep visible dates honest and separate freshness-sensitive searches from information that remains useful over time.

An open charcoal shell reveals a blue interior.

Content recency describes how recently information was published or meaningfully updated. Its value depends on the question. A reader checking current course dates needs fresh details; someone learning an enduring definition may need accuracy more than a recent timestamp.

Match the update to the query

Google describes freshness systems for searches where newer information is expected. That is a query-dependent mechanism, not a rule that every page needs frequent edits. Identify what can expire: prices, availability, product versions, procedures, requirements or event schedules. A cosmetic date change does not make those facts current. An older page may remain useful when its explanation and references still hold.

Create a review trigger

Assign an owner to each page with time-sensitive information and record the source of the key facts. Set reviews around actual changes, such as a course intake or product release, rather than an arbitrary publishing quota. Check links, screenshots and examples as well as the main paragraph. Where a visible revision date appears, use it to describe a real editorial review and explain major changes when that helps readers.

Preserve useful search history

Update an established landing page when the same purpose continues. Avoid making annual copies that compete for the same search intent unless users need a separate archive. Keep expired events clearly identified and link to the relevant current option. A review within SEO services can connect maintenance effort with important customer decisions instead of simply counting recently edited pages.

Record what becomes outdated

Maintain a short list of volatile fields for each important page: a booking deadline, supported software version or service inclusion, for example. Connect each field to the team that knows when it changes. Review the page when that team changes the underlying offer. This is more practical than assigning the same monthly rewrite to both a current timetable and a stable explanation of how the service works.

A seasonal business example

Imagine a Perth swimming school updating its summer timetable. Dates, session availability and booking conditions should change together, including any downloadable schedule. Its explanation of beginner swimming lessons might need only a modest accuracy review. Compare relevant queries and enquiries in Google Search Console and business reporting after the update, while accounting for seasonal demand. A rise in traffic alone would not establish that a fresh timestamp caused the improvement.

Common questions

Only when the date accurately describes the content. Artificially refreshing timestamps can mislead readers without adding useful information.

Use its risk of becoming inaccurate and business importance. Review sooner when the product, service or underlying evidence changes.
