Topical Authority

Understand topical authority, plan connected content around real expertise, and measure whether stronger topic coverage helps relevant visitors and enquiries.

Topical authority describes a publisher’s depth and credibility within a subject. It is a useful planning idea for SEO, but it is not a public Google score that rises whenever another article is published.

What it means for search

A strong topic collection helps visitors move from an initial question to a practical decision. Its value comes from accurate explanations, first-hand experience and clear relationships between pages. Google describes several relevance and quality systems; it does not provide a universal topical-authority target for business websites. Search intent matters more than covering every phrase a keyword tool can generate.

A practical check

Choose one service and list the decisions a prospective customer must make before enquiring. Match each decision to an existing page, then identify unanswered questions that your team can address convincingly. Check whether the main service page has an internal link to each genuinely useful supporting resource. Review overlap before commissioning more articles. Record who can verify each factual claim and who will maintain information when products, processes or availability change.

Keep a topic register that records the audience, the question, the evidence and the next review trigger. This makes on-page SEO decisions easier to explain when someone proposes a new article. If the search intent already has a strong answer, consider adding an internal link or a missing example before creating another URL. The register should also identify subjects the business is not qualified to cover, so expansion remains connected to its real expertise.

A hypothetical business example

A hypothetical Perth commercial cleaning business might explain office cleaning scopes, after-hours access, consumable costs and the differences between routine cleaning and a one-off deep clean. Its own inspection checklist would add practical detail. A collection of generic articles about every cleaning product would be less useful if those products have no connection with the services it offers or the choices its customers face.

Limits and next steps

Breadth cannot compensate for weak pages or unsupported expertise. A specialist article may deserve its own URL, while a minor question may only need a paragraph on an existing page. Track relevant queries, landing-page visits and qualified enquiries across the collection. Treat changes as evidence to investigate, because seasonality, competition and other site improvements can also affect performance.

A focused SEO plan can connect this work with the pages, enquiries and business decisions it should support.

Common questions

No universal metric with that name is published for ordinary business sites. It is an editorial strategy that can support useful, relevant content.

There is no fixed number. Publish enough to answer meaningful customer questions accurately, and maintain that coverage before expanding further.

Terms in this guide

  • Search intent — The task or question behind a search, such as learning a concept, comparing options or finding a provider. Content should answer the intended need.
  • Internal link — A hyperlink between pages on the same website. Useful internal links connect related subjects, explain the site structure and give readers a relevant next step.
  • On-page SEO — Work on a page’s content and structure, including its topic, headings, metadata, relevant links and images, to help people and search engines understand it.
  • SEO — Search engine optimisation: making a website’s content and technical foundations easier for search engines to understand and more useful for people finding it through search.
