Technical SEO Rank Factors

HTTPS Security

Review HTTPS for pages, assets and enquiry forms. Check certificates and migration signals while understanding the limits of encrypted website connections.

A blue sphere is visible inside a silver conduit.

HTTPS protects information in transit between a browser and a website using an authenticated encrypted connection. It is an essential part of a trustworthy public website, especially where people submit details. HTTPS does not prove that the business is reputable or that the application has no security weaknesses.

Security and search have different scopes

Google’s page-experience guidance includes checking that pages are served securely. The practical SEO concern also includes consistent preferred URLs, redirects and resource access when moving from HTTP to HTTPS. A certificate alone does not create a content-quality advantage or promise a ranking increase. Visitors still need accurate service information and a safe, functioning enquiry process. Treat secure transport as a technical foundation, alongside application maintenance and suitable handling of the information the website collects.

Check the whole customer journey

Open public pages and the enquiry form over HTTPS, then inspect certificate validity, hostname coverage and mixed-content errors. Confirm that internal links and required assets use secure destinations. Test how HTTP requests reach the intended HTTPS page and check canonical URL and sitemap consistency. Review expiry monitoring and renewal ownership with the host. Submit a controlled form test to verify that the actual destination is secure and functioning, because a secure page can still point a form at an unsuitable endpoint.

Test supported hostname variants before enabling broad transport policies. A secure main domain does not prove that every subdomain has a working certificate or can safely accept the same long-lived configuration.

Plan a protocol migration carefully

Imagine an older Perth business website is being moved to secure hosting. A working certificate is one part of the job; images, scripts, old links and redirect rules also need attention. Map the preferred secure addresses, check representative pages and ensure the migration does not create loops or duplicate protocol versions. After release, monitor errors and indexing while confirming customer actions still work. Do not describe the site as completely secure simply because the browser displays a successful encrypted connection.

Secure URL migration checks can form part of technical SEO support.

Common questions

No. The commonly used certificate term relates to secure transport using modern TLS. Application vulnerabilities, access control and data handling still need attention.

Yes. Secure transport protects submitted information in transit. Also review the form’s destination, access controls, validation and follow-up workflow.

Terms in this guide

  • HTTPS — HTTP delivered over an encrypted TLS connection. It protects information in transit and authenticates the connection to the server; it does not by itself make an application secure.
  • TLS — Transport Layer Security, the protocol used to encrypt and authenticate modern secure web connections.
  • SSL certificate — A commonly used term for the certificate supporting an authenticated encrypted website connection. Modern secure connections use TLS.
  • Canonical URL — The preferred URL for a page when identical or substantially similar content is accessible through multiple addresses. A canonical link communicates a preference rather than forcing a redirect.
