Interaction to Next Paint, or INP, describes how responsively a page updates after user interactions during a visit. Slow menus, delayed filters and an unresponsive submit button can contribute to a poor experience. INP focuses attention on interaction latency beyond the initial page load.
Understand what the number describes
INP is the current Core Web Vital for responsiveness. A good field value is 200 milliseconds or less at the 75th percentile. It considers qualifying interactions across the page visit, with handling for outliers, rather than only the first click. Delay can come from waiting for the main thread, processing an event and presenting the next frame. It is not a measure of network completion alone, nor does a fast first paint prove that later controls will respond well.
Reproduce a real slow interaction
Exercise the menu, accordion, filters and form under representative mobile conditions. Record a performance trace around the specific delay and identify long tasks, expensive handlers or rendering work. Check third-party scripts as well as application code. Consider splitting work, yielding during long tasks and giving timely visual feedback while longer operations continue. Validate keyboard behaviour and result correctness after any change. A faster click that opens the wrong panel or loses a form field is not a successful optimisation.
Include repeat interactions, not only a first click on a freshly loaded page. Work accumulated during the visit or a large selected dataset can expose delays that a minimal demonstration does not reproduce.
Make a quote tool feel responsive
Imagine a service estimator recalculates a large set of options on every keystroke. A customer typing a suburb sees characters lag behind their input. Reducing unnecessary calculations, deferring non-essential work and keeping immediate input feedback lightweight gives a focused optimisation plan. Test the heaviest realistic option set, not just an empty form. Field measurement may take time to show a new pattern, and sites with few interactions may have limited public INP data. Interpret those limits instead of substituting an unrelated loading score.
Technical SEO diagnostics can identify interaction delays needing developer attention.
Common questions
Is INP the same as First Input Delay?
No. INP evaluates responsiveness more broadly across interactions and includes time until the next visual update. It replaced FID in Core Web Vitals.
Can reducing image size fix INP?
Sometimes indirect resource pressure matters, but many INP problems involve JavaScript and rendering work. Profile the delayed interaction before choosing a fix.
Terms in this guide
- Interaction to Next Paint — A responsiveness measure based on the delay between user interactions and the next visual update. Long tasks and excessive JavaScript can make interactions feel slow.
- Core Web Vitals — A set of user experience measures covering loading, responsiveness and visual stability. The current metrics are Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.
- JavaScript — A programming language used for interactive website behaviour and application logic. Essential content should remain accessible if an optional visual feature fails.
- Conversion — A valuable action defined for measurement, such as a qualified enquiry, booked appointment or completed purchase. A page view is not automatically a business outcome.
