Technical SEO Rank Factors

Security Headers

Review security headers against real application dependencies. Test resource loading, enquiry delivery and policy changes without treating scanner scores as SEO.

Silver overhangs protect the top of a charcoal slab.

Security headers are HTTP response instructions that let a website control certain browser behaviours. They can restrict resource loading, reduce some embedding risks and reinforce secure transport. Their configuration should match the application; copying a strict header set without testing can break legitimate scripts, forms or integrations.

Do not confuse a security score with SEO

Headers such as Content Security Policy and Strict-Transport-Security serve security purposes. They are not a published checklist that awards a fixed search ranking benefit. The SEO relationship is usually operational: a broken policy can stop resources loading, while a compromised or unavailable site can harm users and search access. HTTPS and accurate responses still matter, but a high scanner score does not establish that the site is safe. Application behaviour and maintenance remain part of the assessment.

Inventory dependencies before enforcement

Review current response headers and the scripts, styles, images, frames and form destinations the site actually needs. Test proposed policy changes on representative routes and interactive states. Where suitable, use reporting modes to understand violations before enforcement, then investigate rather than blindly allowing every source. Check browser console errors, quote submissions, analytics behaviour and embedded services. Document ownership and rollback. For transport policies, verify HTTPS support across the intended scope before selecting long-lived or broad settings that are difficult to unwind quickly.

Review the deployed response rather than only the application configuration. A CDN or reverse proxy can add, remove or duplicate headers, so the browser may receive a different policy from the one documented internally.

Protect a form without breaking delivery

Suppose a Perth professional-services site adds a policy that accidentally blocks its enquiry submission endpoint. The homepage still looks correct, but leads no longer reach the business. A controlled submission test should expose that failure before release. The policy needs a narrow correction consistent with the actual service, not wholesale removal of protections. Security work should be prioritised according to the application’s risks and dependencies. Any effect on search performance is secondary to making the site reliably usable and appropriately protected.

A technical SEO review can identify resource failures requiring a security specialist or developer.

Common questions

No. A policy depends on the application’s resources, integrations and delivery setup. Use a considered baseline and test its effect on real functionality.

No. It can identify selected configuration issues. It does not fully test application logic, access control, maintenance or how personal information is handled.

Terms in this guide

  • HTTP status code — A response code communicating the result of a request. Examples include 200 for a successful response, 301 for a permanent redirect and 404 for a resource not found.
  • HTTPS — HTTP delivered over an encrypted TLS connection. It protects information in transit and authenticates the connection to the server; it does not by itself make an application secure.
  • JavaScript — A programming language used for interactive website behaviour and application logic. Essential content should remain accessible if an optional visual feature fails.
  • Authentication — The process of checking an identity, such as verifying a signed-in user, application or service before granting access.
