URL Structure

Plan clear, stable URL structures and consistent variants. Review canonical signals and migration needs before changing established addresses for keywords.

A blue sphere rests at the end of a branching charcoal channel.

URL structure is the way a website organises and names its public addresses. Clear, stable URLs make pages easier to link, share and manage. The practical aim is a consistent representation of content, with controlled variants, rather than repeatedly changing addresses to insert more keywords.

Make destinations understandable and stable

Google recommends simple, descriptive URL structures and consistent handling of variants. Readable words can help users understand a destination, but a keyword-rich address cannot compensate for unsuitable content. Avoid unnecessary parameter combinations, session identifiers and changing values that create many versions of the same page. The hierarchy should reflect useful organisation without becoming an overly detailed record of every business category. Existing working URLs also have references, so a cosmetic change needs to justify the migration work it creates.

Define a small set of URL rules

Document protocol, hostname, case, separators and trailing-slash behaviour. Check the same page through plausible variants and confirm a coherent canonical URL or redirect strategy. Review whether filters and campaigns add parameters that should represent distinct content. Ensure links and sitemaps consistently use preferred addresses. Before changing slugs, inventory affected internal links and incoming references, map old destinations to relevant new pages and test the redirect outcome. Ask whether the proposed structure will still make sense if a service name or category changes.

Consider long-term editorial ownership when selecting category segments. Moving a service between internal teams should not force its public URL to change unless the customer-facing structure also needs a meaningful revision.

Avoid needless renaming in a redesign

Suppose a Perth engineering firm already has an established address for its inspection service. Adding several location and service keywords to that slug may make it harder to read while introducing a migration. A clearer page title and better service explanation might address the actual problem without changing the address. If a genuine reorganisation does require new paths, plan the mappings and update navigation in the same release. Evaluate indexing and customer journeys afterwards rather than promising an improvement simply because the URL is shorter.

Common questions

No. Use concise, descriptive addresses that distinguish pages clearly. A useful category segment may be worthwhile if it supports a stable structure.

Usually no. Frequent changes create maintenance and redirect work. Update content and metadata where appropriate, and reserve URL changes for a clear purpose.

Terms in this guide

  • Canonical URL — The preferred URL for a page when identical or substantially similar content is accessible through multiple addresses. A canonical link communicates a preference rather than forcing a redirect.
  • Redirect — A server or browser instruction that sends a request to another URL. Permanent URL migrations should avoid unnecessary chains and link directly to the intended destination.
  • Page title — The title element in a web page’s head. It should identify the page clearly and distinguish it from other pages; search engines may rewrite the displayed title.
  • Sitemap — A structured list of relevant site URLs. XML sitemaps support discovery by search engines; an HTML sitemap helps people navigate the site.
