Intrusive Interstitials

Review intrusive interstitials across arrival, dismissal and repeat visits. Keep main content accessible and make required dialogs understandable and usable.

A charcoal slab blocks part of a silver path before a blue sphere.

Intrusive interstitials are overlays or intermediate screens that obstruct access to the content someone expected to read. They commonly promote offers or request information before the visitor can evaluate the page. A useful prompt should fit the task, remain understandable and allow appropriate access to the underlying content.

Access to the main content matters

Google advises avoiding intrusive dialogs and interstitials that make content harder to access. This does not mean every notice is prohibited; some legally required prompts have a different purpose. The design and implementation still need care. A full-screen promotion on a search landing page can interrupt a visitor before they understand the service. Do not assume that collecting more popup interactions establishes a commercial gain. Consider what the interruption prevents as well as what it asks people to do.

Review arrival, dismissal and repeat visits

Open important pages from a fresh session on a phone and desktop. Record which overlays appear, when they appear and how much content they cover. Test whether close controls are visible, labelled and reachable by keyboard. Check focus behaviour, browser back and whether dismissed promotions immediately return. Review the combined effect of consent notices, sticky banners and optional widgets rather than judging each component alone. Ensure the core page remains available and that required notices accurately reflect their actual purpose.

Check overlays together after a fresh browser visit. An individually modest banner can become obstructive when combined with a second prompt, so review the available reading and interaction space in the actual initial state.

Replace an interruption with a timely invitation

Imagine a Perth professional-services page covers its service explanation with a quote promotion as soon as someone arrives. Placing a clear enquiry invitation beside relevant information may let the visitor first understand the offer. Test whether people can read, compare and contact without being diverted. Where a required notice remains necessary, keep its interaction accessible and purpose-specific. Do not remove or mislabel a genuine requirement to chase a metric; the aim is an appropriate interface that supports informed use of the page.

Overlay behaviour can be assessed within a page-experience and SEO audit.

Common questions

No. Purpose, size and behaviour matter. Google’s guidance targets interruptions that make content difficult to access, while some required dialogs are treated differently.

No. A dismiss control should be identifiable and usable across input methods and screen sizes. Test the whole interaction and focus behaviour.

Terms in this guide

  • Landing page — A page designed around a particular audience, campaign or action. Effective landing pages connect the visitor’s expectation with clear information and a relevant next step.
  • Accessibility — Designing content and controls so people with different abilities can use them, including through a keyboard, screen reader, enlarged text or reduced motion.
  • UX design — User experience design: understanding people’s tasks and shaping the structure, content and interactions that help them complete those tasks.
  • Conversion — A valuable action defined for measurement, such as a qualified enquiry, booked appointment or completed purchase. A page view is not automatically a business outcome.
