What is lead generation?

Creating and converting demand into prospective customer enquiries. Success depends on lead quality and follow-up as well as the number of enquiries.

Define what a useful lead looks like

Lead generation connects people who may need a service with a way to start a relevant business conversation. It can involve search, advertising, referrals and useful website content. The enquiry mechanism may be a form, a phone call or a booking journey.

Measurement should identify the actions the business actually values. Google Ads, for example, supports measuring different kinds of customer actions rather than treating all visits equally. Google explains conversion measurement. The business still needs to define which enquiries are suitable and what happens next.

Example: a service enquiry reaches the right person

Imagine a company offering both website development and IT support. A form that captures the relevant service and a short description can help route the enquiry to the appropriate team. The confirmation should tell the customer that the submission succeeded, while the enquiry record gives staff enough context to respond.

Track whether the lead was contacted, qualified, quoted and won or lost. An advertising campaign generating many unsuitable requests may look productive in a form report while consuming staff time. Conversely, a small number of well-matched enquiries can be valuable even when the website’s total traffic is modest.

Connect marketing to follow-up

Test the capture process and nominate an owner for unassigned enquiries. Keep notifications and stored records consistent, and provide a way to recover a lead if a notification fails. Review duplicate submissions, spam and internal tests before reporting totals.

Do not optimise a campaign solely to make forms shorter if the team then lacks information needed to respond. Ask only for useful information, but keep enough context to assess the request. Compare channels using a consistent definition of a qualified lead, and review later outcomes where the CRM records are reliable. The form submission is the beginning of the workflow, not its conclusion.

Common questions about lead generation

Not every submission is a suitable sales opportunity. Separate genuine enquiries from spam, duplicate messages, supplier approaches and requests outside the business’s service offering.

Yes. Many service businesses sell through a conversation, assessment or quote. The website’s role is to help the right prospective customer begin that process.

  • CRM — Customer relationship management software that organises contacts, enquiries and customer activity so a team can follow up consistently.
  • Conversion — A valuable action defined for measurement, such as a qualified enquiry, booked appointment or completed purchase. A page view is not automatically a business outcome.
  • Conversion tracking — A measurement setup that records meaningful customer actions and their source where permitted, helping connect marketing activity to enquiries or sales.
  • Landing page — A page designed around a particular audience, campaign or action. Effective landing pages connect the visitor’s expectation with clear information and a relevant next step.

Useful SEO evaluation follows the journey from a relevant visit to a qualified enquiry and its later outcome.
