Page Rank Factors

Keyword in Title Tag

Write descriptive page titles that reflect the topic and reader’s intent, without relying on keyword repetition or guaranteed Google title display.

The title tag supplies a page title in the HTML document. It helps identify the page in browser contexts and is one source Google may use for the clickable title shown in search. Its wording should describe the specific page accurately.

Make the subject unmistakable

Use the terms the intended audience would recognise, including the main service or product when relevant. Distinguish pages that offer different things. Google’s title-link guidance recommends concise, descriptive titles and discourages repetitive keyword strings. The objective is an accurate label, not a list of every query variation. A title cannot compensate for a page whose content fails to deliver what the label promises.

Choose information that helps selection

Prioritise the distinguishing subject, useful context and brand where it adds recognition. A location belongs when it describes the actual offer or audience, not simply to repeat a city on every page. Avoid unsupported superlatives, fictitious prices and dates that make unchanged material look current. Keep the page title consistent with the main heading while allowing their wording to suit different display contexts.

Audit templates and real search appearance

Check rendered titles for missing values, repeated brand names and multiple pages using the same default label. Review queries and result appearance in Google Search Console alongside relevance and page performance. Google can generate a different title link from other signals, and truncation depends on available display space. SEO content review can improve the underlying page labels without guaranteeing exact display.

Check titles across neighbouring pages

Export titles for pages in the same service or product group and read them together. Look for labels that are identical despite different offers, or different labels that disguise duplicate intent. Resolve those issues with the content plan before polishing individual words. A consistent naming convention can make the collection easier to maintain while still allowing each page to explain its distinctive purpose to someone seeing only its title.

A service-page example

Suppose a Perth workshop has separate pages for aluminium fabrication and stainless steel fabrication. Titles that name the respective service help readers distinguish them more clearly than Workshop Services on both pages. Repeating fabrication, metal fabrication and fabrication Perth within one title would add little. Compare click-through rate in context after a change, recognising that position, query mix and competitors also influence clicks. An improved title is one part of the page’s relevance, not an isolated promise of a ranking rise.

Common questions

Use clear audience language that accurately names the subject. Exact repetition is not a universal requirement for every query variation.

Not always. Google may generate another title link, and display length varies with device and result layout.

Terms in this guide

  • Page title — The title element in a web page’s head. It should identify the page clearly and distinguish it from other pages; search engines may rewrite the displayed title.
  • Google Search Console — Google’s tool for monitoring a website’s presence in Search, including performance, indexing reports and URL inspection.
  • Click-through rate — The proportion of impressions that lead to clicks, usually expressed as a percentage. It needs to be interpreted alongside the query, position, audience and resulting enquiries.
