What is a prototype?

An early representation of a product or website used to test layout, interaction and user journeys before committing to the full build.

A way to test decisions before building

A prototype makes a proposed experience tangible enough to explore. It might be a clickable screen sequence, a paper exercise or a small coded interaction. The right level of detail depends on the question being tested: navigation needs different evidence from a complex calculation.

The GOV.UK Service Manual describes prototyping as a way to explore and test designs before committing to a build. The value comes from finding unclear assumptions while changes are still manageable.

Example: testing an online quote journey

Suppose customers need to describe a job, choose a service and submit enough information for a quote. A prototype can test whether people understand the questions, where they hesitate and whether a confirmation screen explains the next step.

Use realistic example content rather than filling every field with “test”. Include a missing answer, an unsuitable request and a customer returning to an earlier step. These cases often reveal problems that are invisible when someone demonstrates only the ideal route through polished screens.

Separate demonstrated behaviour from finished software

A clickable approval button may only move to another screen. It does not prove that permission checks, saved records, notifications or integrations have been implemented. Record these boundaries when reviewing the prototype, so agreement on appearance is not mistaken for completion of the underlying system.

Keep a decision log with the question tested, the observed difficulty and the resulting change. Refined IT can use that record to define the development scope and acceptance checks. A prototype should reduce uncertainty about what to build, rather than become a presentation that nobody is willing to revise.

Common questions about prototype

A wireframe primarily plans structure. A prototype demonstrates enough behaviour to test an interaction or journey; it can use simple wireframes or detailed visual screens.

Sometimes parts can be reused, but production requirements need separate review. Security, data handling, accessibility, performance and maintenance cannot be assumed from a successful demonstration.

  • Wireframe — A simplified screen layout used to plan content hierarchy, navigation and controls before final visual design.
  • Figma — A collaborative design and prototyping platform used to review screen layouts, interface components and user journeys before development.
  • UX design — User experience design: understanding people’s tasks and shaping the structure, content and interactions that help them complete those tasks.
  • UI design — User interface design: the visual and interactive controls through which someone uses a digital product, including components, states and responsive behaviour.

A prototype lets a team test how customers move from information to enquiry before development decisions become expensive to change.
