Technical SEO Rank Factors

Page Speed

Measure page speed through loading, interaction and real customer tasks. Build a useful baseline and prioritise the bottlenecks affecting important pages.

A blue spindle sits on a silver track beneath a charcoal arch.

Page speed describes how quickly a website delivers useful content and responds through the visitor’s journey. It is broader than a single stopwatch reading or audit score. Loading, interaction and stability can each fail for different reasons, so performance work should start with the experience that needs improvement.

Choose measures that answer the problem

A page can display a logo quickly while its service information remains unavailable, or load promptly and then stall when someone uses a form. Core Web Vitals provide standard measures for important aspects of experience, while server timing and resource analysis help explain causes. Search systems do not promise a fixed ranking gain for reducing a page’s load time by a particular amount. The commercial benefit also depends on whether the faster page answers the visitor’s task and offers a working next step.

Build a representative performance baseline

Select several important templates and test them under stated network, device and cache conditions. Record field measurements where sufficient data exists, then use lab traces to inspect large resources, blocking files and long tasks. Separate server response from transfer and rendering delays. Check both first-time and returning visits, and include third-party components such as maps or form tools. Assign each proposed change to an observed bottleneck and retest the same journey after deployment so the comparison has a clear meaning.

Keep a record of resource ownership. If a third-party widget creates the main delay, the available options may involve its configuration or replacement rather than changes to the site’s own application code.

Prioritise a slow customer route

Suppose a hypothetical Perth trades website has a lightweight homepage but a service page loads several large galleries before the enquiry form becomes usable. Optimising only the homepage would miss a key conversion route. Appropriate image sizes, selective loading and reduced script work may be better priorities on the service template. Confirm that image quality, navigation and submission still work. A faster technical result is valuable evidence, but qualified enquiries and customer understanding should be reviewed separately without assuming a guaranteed increase.

Use an SEO audit to place performance findings alongside content and enquiry priorities.

Common questions

Use appropriate user-centred measures and good field Core Web Vitals as practical goals. A single composite lab score can hide different underlying problems.

Network conditions, cache state, server load and device processing change. Record the conditions and compare multiple representative runs rather than one favourable result.

Terms in this guide

  • Core Web Vitals — A set of user experience measures covering loading, responsiveness and visual stability. The current metrics are Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.
  • Hosting — The infrastructure and services that make a website accessible online. Capacity, reliability, security, backups and support should match the site’s role in the business.
  • Caching — Storing a reusable copy of a response or asset so it can be delivered more efficiently. Cache rules must account for changes and private information.
  • Conversion — A valuable action defined for measurement, such as a qualified enquiry, booked appointment or completed purchase. A page view is not automatically a business outcome.
