What is a firewall?

A control that permits or blocks network traffic according to rules. It is one part of a broader security approach, alongside secure configuration, updates and monitoring.

Network protection and website protection

A network firewall applies rules to traffic crossing a network boundary or reaching a device. A web application firewall, often called a WAF, focuses on web requests before they reach an application. These controls operate at different points and can complement each other.

Rules may consider addresses, connection state, request patterns or application behaviour, depending on the product. A firewall can run as software, an appliance or a managed cloud service. Cloudflare describes the main firewall types. Its value depends on placement, configuration and ongoing review.

Example: a legitimate form submission gets blocked

Imagine a website form that accepts ordinary enquiries but rejects a customer’s detailed technical message. A protection rule may have mistaken part of the submission for an attack. Turning off the entire firewall would remove more protection than necessary.

Instead, correlate the failed submission with the security event, identify the rule and check the affected route. If an exception is appropriate, keep it narrowly scoped and verify that application-side validation remains effective. The same method applies when a payment callback or CRM webhook is blocked: confirm the legitimate request rather than allowing all traffic from an unverified source.

Checks that keep firewall rules useful

Document why an access rule exists, who owns it and when it should be reviewed. Remove obsolete exceptions after migrations or temporary troubleshooting. Test important journeys after a rule change, including forms, sign-in, administrative access and integrations.

A firewall does not correct weak passwords, excessive permissions or vulnerable application code. Keep software updates, authentication controls and recovery planning in place. Security logs are only useful if someone can investigate the events that matter. For a business website, the objective is to reduce harmful access while allowing customers and authorised systems to complete their work.

Common questions about firewall

No. A firewall controls traffic, while endpoint security tools address threats on devices. Their roles can overlap in a product suite, but one does not automatically replace the other.

Yes, an overly broad rule or challenge can block legitimate requests. Investigate the specific event and test the affected journey before changing the protection settings.

  • Authentication — The process of checking an identity, such as verifying a signed-in user, application or service before granting access.
  • Webhook — An event-triggered HTTP message sent from one system to another. Receivers should verify the sender, validate the data and handle retries safely.
  • Hosting — The infrastructure and services that make a website accessible online. Capacity, reliability, security, backups and support should match the site’s role in the business.
  • Backup — A recoverable copy of data or system state. A backup plan should specify retention, access protection and how restoration is tested.

Traffic protection needs checks for legitimate visitors and search crawlers as well as suspicious requests.
